International Joke Day is celebrated on July 1st and marks the beginning of a month full of good humour, good weather… and excellent wine. So, nothing better than celebrating with a laugh marathon, just a click away thanks to these Stand-Up Comedy series, and a glass of wine in your hand. These are the 5 best options, available on streaming platforms, to roll over laughing.

    1.      Middleditch and Schwartz (Netflix)

Middleditch and Schwartz”, available on Netflix, is a Stand-up Comedy series presented by the comedy duo Thomas Middleditch and Ben Schwartz who, during three 60 minutes episodes, improvise hilarious stories from random challenges thrown by the audience.

The result is a lot of laughs in episodes like “Parking Lot wedding” the “Law School Magic” (complete with aliens) and “Dream Job,” an episode that sees Middleditch and Schwartz create a job search scenario that’s as absurd as it is comical. Enjoy this Stand Up Comedy series and accompany it with a snack board and a glass of Mandriola de Lisboa red wine.

    2.      Só de Passagem (Youtube)

Guilherme Duarte is a Portuguese humorist, chronicler and author of the blog “Por Falar Noutra Coisa”, with over 36 million views. In “Só de Passagem“, filmed in Braga (Portugal), he presents himself solo on stage. In this video, of about an hour and a half, he doesn’t leave anything out, not even the most fracturing subjects: death, religion, fears and insecurities of life in society.

A Stand-up Comedy show by one of the most relevant voices of the Portuguese scene, in a video made available entirely for free. Accompany the lightness of spirit of this artist with a glass of Mandriola white, an elegant white wine with a fresh and fruity profile.

    3.      Nanette (Netflix)

Hannah Gadsby is an Australian comedian and television presenter who reinvented stand-up comedy shows after winning the Raw Comedy competition for new comedians in 2006. The success crossed borders until it “landed” on Netflix with “Nanette“.

Since its release in 2018, it has become one of the most-watched Stand-Up Comedy shows on this streaming service – and it’s easy to see why. “Nanette” features clever, direct and biting humour, served up to the audience by Hannah Gadsby with a unique stage presence.

In all, it’s an hour and nine minutes of humour combined with personal revelations about gender, stories based on sexual orientation and troubled childhood memories. An insightful work that makes those who watch it smile and reflect. During this month, open a bottle of Mandriola wine, either red or white, and gobble it up – the series, of course.

    4.      Standing Up (Netflix)

Standing up” is a series created by Fanny Herrero, author of the French TV series “Dix pour cent”, where the characters show the hard work, joy and tears behind a career as a comedian in Stand-Up Comedy shows.

This series, for now, with six episodes, tells the story of four friends willing to dominate in the world of Stand-Up Comedy in Paris. Every night, these aspiring comedians meet at Drôle, a Parisian pub for Stand-Up Comedy performances.

Between the growing fame of some, the domestic tensions of others and secret projects, there is room for a lot of laughs. Follow the turbulent daily life and all the emotions felt by these young people in a production that has us glued to the screen. It is ideal to watch with friends: sit comfortably on the sofa, click on ‘Play’ and warm up for a laugh with Mandriola red wine.

    5.      Jerrod Carmichael: Rothaniel (HBO Max)

A man alone on stage at the legendary Blue Note Jazz Club, in New York City, reveals to the world that he is gay. The sexual orientation hidden for more than three decades, of the renowned comedian Jerrod Carmichael, is revealed under the watchful eye of the audience who get emotional and laugh with him during the Stand-Up Comedy show.

The 35-year-old comedian began his professional career in 2011, having performed in ‘open mic’ performances at the Comedy Store in Hollywood and in HBO Max comedy specials like “Love at the Store” (2014) and “8” (2017). If you already know him, or even if you’ve never seen any of his shows, this Stand-Up Comedy masterpiece is well worth watching.

Rothaniel” premiered in April this year on HBO Max and is an undiscovered gem amongst the hundreds of Stand-Up Comedy options that streaming services have to offer. 55 very special minutes, filmed in an intimate way, almost resembling a therapy session (but watered down with moments of great humour!). A new production that asks for a glass of wine with a rich and complex flavour, just like our Mandriola red.

With these Stand-up Comedy series, every day can be the International Joke Day. Organize an evening with Friends and let the laughs run free. And don’t forget the Mandriola. Because smiling at life, with a good glass of wine, is much easier.
