June is a month full of excitement, with the Santos Populares festivals bringing life to the streets of various cities. If you’re thinking of making the most of this season, here are some suggestions for routes and festivals to maximize your enjoyment.
Lisboa – Santo António
On the night of June 12-13, Lisbon takes to the streets to welcome Santo António. If you don’t have a program yet, follow this route through the most traditional neighborhoods.
1. Alfama
Alfama is the heart of the Santo António festivities and a great starting point. Stroll through the streets, listen to the marches, and enjoy the music and food stalls.
Snack on the first grilled sardines of the night at the outdoor taverns and stalls. If you have the energy, climb up to the Santa Luzia viewpoint for a spectacular view over Alfama and the Tejo.
2. Bica
Head to Bica, where the festivities are intense. Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo is especially lively, a traditional spot that’s always worth a visit. If you can, follow the marches down from Bairro Alto to Bica.
3. Mouraria
Mouraria is another must-stop. With a lot of history and tradition, you’ll find narrow streets and lively alleys.
The festivities on Rua do Capelão and Largo da Severa are unmissable. Also, visit Casa da Achada – Centro Mário Dionísio for a bit of culture amidst the excitement of the festivals.
Porto – São João
Shortly after, the celebration moves north. On the night of June 23rd to 24th, São João kicks off in full swing in Porto.
1. Ribeira
Start your night by the Douro River. The Ribeira area is the meeting point for thousands of people and fills up with crowds dining at the many restaurants and terraces. At midnight, the fireworks over the river are an unmissable spectacle. Arrive early to secure a good spot before the festivities begin.
2. Clérigos
Then, head to the Clérigos area, always bustling with life, music, and dancing, along with the famous plastic hammers and leek.
The taverns and bars in the zone are perfect for a drink and some snacks, such as caldo verde and grilled sardines.
3. Foz do Douro
After the hustle and bustle of Ribeira and Clérigos, head to Foz for a quieter atmosphere.
Braga – São João
On the same night of June 23rd to 24th, Braga also celebrates São João in style.
1. Historic Center
Start your stroll in the heart of Braga, where tradition can be felt around every corner. Explore the old streets of the historic center, starting with the Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedrals in the country.
2. Avenida da Liberdade

3. Parque da Ponte

Vila Real – São Pedro
Further north and a few days later, head to Vila Real for São Pedro, from June 28th to 29th.
1. City Center

Explore the historic center of Vila Real, visit the Cathedral, and admire the city’s architecture. The São Pedro processions are an important part of the celebration. For a cultural experience, take the opportunity to visit the Mateus Palace during the day.
2. Carvalho Araújo Avenue
At night, head to Avenida Carvalho Araújo, the central point of the celebrations, with many food stalls, music, and dance. The pork sandwiches and regional sweets are a must-try.
3. Nossa Senhora da Piedade Viewpoint
For a panoramic view of the city illuminated by the festivities, Nossa Senhora da Piedade viewpoint is the ideal spot to relax a bit before returning to the excitement.
Almada – São João
Almada celebrates São João on the night of June 23rd to 24th with a big party.
1. Cacilhas
Stroll through the streets of Cacilhas, where you’ll find a vibrant atmosphere. Visit the Cacilhas Lighthouse and the Frigate D. Fernando II and Glória, where you can learn a bit more about Portugal’s naval history.
You’ll find several riverside restaurants with stunning views of Lisbon, but make sure to book in advance.
2. Costa da Caparica
Then head to Costa da Caparica, where the beaches are filled with festivities. Don’t miss the bonfires on the beach and the fireworks at midnight.
3. Cristo Rei
Finish the night at Cristo Rei, with a spectacular view over Lisbon and the Tejo River. A perfect spot for a peaceful farewell to São João night.
